Gain a fundamental understanding of the relationship between spirituality and psychology, both in theory and clinical practice. Our Certificate of Advanced Studies: Pastoral Care and Counseling is designed for professionals to integrate pastoral identity into a previous master’s degree in the mental health field. (Applicants for this certificate program must have a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or other similar field.)

As a student, you will consult with a faculty advisor to design an individualized learning contract covering 18 graduate credits. You will explore the spectrum of counseling theories and clinical modalities, as well as the differences among spiritual leadership, pastoral counseling, and spiritual formation and direction. Upon completion, you can apply these credits toward our Pastoral Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s degree. (Faculty recommendation is required.)

Strengthen your pastoral identity, spirituality, and pastoral care practice through a combination of theoretical understanding and practical skills. Our Pastoral Care Specialist Certification is designed to prepare ministers, deacons, hospice workers, and/or lay pastoral caregivers to meet the unique mental and spiritual demands of a culturally diverse world.

As a student, you will complete 18 hours of focused coursework and clinical practice and develop competencies in crisis intervention, substance abuse, grief, and loss. Upon completion, you will meet with a faculty advisor to demonstrate your understanding of the integrative nature of pastoral work, the characteristics necessary in extending pastoral care and support, and the limits to the specific roles for which you are trained.

To apply for this certificate program, you must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited, degree-granting institution with a minimum 3.00 GPA.
